The Franklin Half Dollars were minted at three different mints; the Philadelphia Mint (P), the Denver Mint (D), and the San Francisco Mint (S) from 1948-1963. There are no rare issues in particular in this series. The lowest strikes were 2.8 million coins struck by the Philadelphia Mint in 1953. The highest strikes were 67 million coins struck by the Denver Mint in 1963. The mint marks “D” and “S” can be found above the Liberty Bell on the reverse.
The total mintage for the entire series was around 498 million coins. All these coins were in circulation, and so most of these coins will bring a small premium over the bullion value. These coins command higher premiums only if they are in a Mint State 65 and above.
35 different business strikes and 14 different proofs complete a full set of Franklin Half Dollars. The Franklin Half Dollars were a short series struck only for 16 years. Their journey was cut short in 1963 when John F. Kennedy was assassinated and to honor his passing, the Mint issued a new Half Dollar Coin which was the Kennedy Half Dollar.
The Franklin Half Dollar was designed by John R. Sinnock but before he could finish the design he died and his successor at the Mint, Gilroy Roberts completed the design.
This is the last complete Silver Half Dollar set to have been made of 90% silver and 10% copper. After the Coinage Act of 1965, all coins were made from Copper and Nickle combination without any silver in it. This coin has a high historical significance as well as great numismatic value. Collectors and investors alike show great interest in this coin.
