Detailed Information:
A competition held for three different denominations the dime, quarters, and half dollars between three New York sculptors - Adolph Weinman, Hermon MacNeil and Albin Polasek, resulted in Weinman winning the right to design two coins the dime and half dollars and MacNeil winning to design the quarters.
All three coins are extremely popular to this day, and each is known for its own beauty and magnificence. Although there were some controversy regarding MacNeil’s design in the beginning, today the Standing Liberty is one of the most sought after coins.
MacNeil had designed a strong militaristic image of Liberty yet showing off her feministic side with her bare breast. The design depicted a full length image of Lady Liberty draped in a smooth flowing robe which slips off from her shoulder baring her breast. The image looks as if she is striding forward confidently towards the steps through a gate between two strong walls. Her head is turned towards the right, the heraldic east, the direction of the European War. Even her shield adorned with Stars and Stripes also faces the right in defense. In her left hand, Liberty is holding an olive branch to symbolize desire for peace. According to MacNeil, the design on the obverse gives out a message that Liberty is “stepping forward in the defense of peace as her ultimate goal.” In the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST” engraved on the walls, the “U” in TRUST is shaped as “V” which represents the vowel “U” in Greek.
The reverse shows the image of a bald eagle in flight from left to right with 13 stars encircling it, representing the 13 original colonies.
The bare breasted Liberty design invited criticism upon its release by many religious leaders and groups of citizens. Later on the design was modified with Liberty wearing a chain mail vest so that it could be accepted by all.
