The obverse design is inspired by James Earle Fraser’s famous Indian Head and Buffalo Nickel, which became one of the most beloved coins in history. Fraser -- a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens -- was tasked with capturing the elusive beauty and dignity of the American West. The Native American featured in the design is believed to be an aggregate of three chiefs from differing tribes: Two Moons of the Cheyenne, Big Tree of the Kiowa, and Iron Tail of the Lakota Sioux.

The reverse is graced with the image of Black Diamond bison. Fraser sketched the buffalo at the Central Park Zoo, where Black Diamond was known to excite crowds every day.
