The image was created by the talented 40-year-old magazine illustrator James Montgomery Flagg, who declared that his poster is a portrait of “Uncle Sam”. The cover shortly became “the most famous poster in the world”. Between 1917 and 1918, over four million copies have been printed and plastered on lampposts and walls in US cities from coast to coast, as the US entered the World War I and was in need to rally enlistments and support for the armed forces of the Nation.

Due to its huge popularity, the poster was revived in 1941, being adapted and used in World War II, and again, becoming a huge success.
