Zeus, the Greek god of the sky, lightning, and thunder had a child with a mortal woman named Alcmene. This child’s name was Hercules, one of the most recognizable characters in Greek mythology. This demi-god’s incredible deeds have been depicted in art and literature throughout all of history. After being driven mad by the goddess Hera who caused him to slay his family,  Hercules was instructed by the Delphic oracle to serve King Eurytheus, and complete his 10 labors. This silver round series pays tribute to the eventual 12 labors that Hercules ended up performing as his sentence for slaying his family. There are 12 labors total because two more labors were added to the initial ten, as Eurytheus decided two of the original labors were not completed properly. For the third labor, he was instructed by King Eurytheus to bring the wild mares of the Thracian King Diomedes to Mycene. Making this task more difficult, the mares were wild and maddened due to their diet of human flesh. In order to calm the mares down, Heracles had to feed them the body of their master, Diomedes. After they were subdued, Hercules was able to take them back to Eurystheus.

The obverse of the round displays a profile view of Hercules, wearing the skin of the Nemean Lion on his head. Inscriptions on the obverse include the weight and purity of the round.

The Four Mares of Diomedes, fiercely galloping ahead, are featured on the reverse of the round. Inscriptions include "MARES OF DIOMEDES", as well as the Roman numeral for ‘8’.
