Bullion Exchanges is pleased to offer the $1 Gold Liberty Head Type 1 – Polished or Cleaned (Random Year), a historic piece of pre-1933 U.S. gold coinage. Struck from .900 fine gold, this classic Type 1 Gold Dollar features James B. Longacre’s iconic Liberty Head design, first introduced in 1849. As these coins have been polished or cleaned, they may exhibit surface alterations, but they still retain their historical significance and intrinsic gold value.
The Gold Liberty Head Dollar was first minted in 1849, following the discovery of gold in California during the Gold Rush. It became the smallest gold coin ever produced by the U.S. Mint, both in weight and diameter. The Type 1 design (1849-1854) features Lady Liberty in a coronet, reminiscent of larger denomination gold coins of the time. Due to its small size and wearability, many of these coins were used in jewelry, leading to a higher rate of polished or cleaned specimens.
Coin Features:
- Contains 1.67 grams of .900 fine gold
- Polished or Cleaned condition
- Struck by the US Mint
- Face Value: $1 USD, fully backed by the U.S. government
- US Mint issue from the following mints: Philadelphia, New Orleans, Charlotte, San Francisco, or Dahlonega.
- Individual coins will come in protective plastic flips.
- Obverse: Features a bust of Lady Liberty on her left side encircled by 13 stars, symbolizing the original colonies of the New World.
- Reverse: Shows the denomination and year of mintage encircled by the laurel wreath
