The Roosevelt Dime was introduced in 1946, shortly after the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945. The denomination was particularly appropriate for the memorial because of Roosevelt's close association with the March of Dimes, which raised funds in the fight against polio. Designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John R. Sinnock, the new dime was officially released on January 30, 1946, Roosevelt's birthday.
Sinnock's obverse features a left-facing portrait of Roosevelt, while the reverse displays a central torch representing liberty, flanked by an olive branch symbolizing peace and an oak branch representing strength. Roosevelt Dimes were struck in 90% silver from 1946 through 1964. Beginning in 1965, circulating dimes transitioned to a copper-nickel clad composition under the Coinage Act of 1965.
