While the British Royal Mint has been producing coinage for over one thousand years, the Britannia Gold Coin program is a fairly recent series, debuting in 1997. Since then, it has remained among its most popular products alongside its Queen’s Beasts collection. The Britannia gold coin is named after the Roman mythological figure of Britannia. In October of 2020, the Royal Mint unveiled a major update to the Britannia gold coin design, incorporating several new security elements to crack down on counterfeiting. These four elements include: a special wave design on the coin’s background, smooth lines on Britannia’s shield, a holographic image of a padlock in the bottom left which transitions to a trident, and the Latin phrase “Decus Et Tutamen” ('An ornament and a safeguard') etched along the inner rim of the coin. These small details bolster the security of this coin, so collectors can place their trust in the Royal Mint now more than ever before.

The obverse of the coin shows Jody Clark’s iconic portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen appears in her royal diadem with her matching earrings. Engravings of the denomination and the Queen’s name border her portrait.

The reverse of the Britannia gold coin displays Britannia wearing a toga and holding a shield bearing the Union Jack with her left hand. She wields a trident in her outstretched right arm as she stands as a proud image of Great Britain before the ocean. Surrounding her are inscriptions bearing her name and the coin’s purity, year of mintage, and weight.
