The obverse of the coin features Otto Schultz’s design of President Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900. Kruger played an important role in the movement to restore the South African Republic's independence. This goal was achieved in 1884 when Britain recognized the South African Republic as a fully independent state. Surrounding Paul Kruger’s left-facing profile on the obverse is the inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA”.

On the coin’s reverse the National Animal of South Africa, the springbok antelope, leaps gracefully through a grassy plain. Inscriptions on the reverse include “ KRUGERRAND” “2020” as well as the weight and purity of the coin.
