The US Mint started the American Eagle Program in 1986, following the passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. The first American Eagles released were gold and silver Eagle coins. Gold Eagles are produced in denominations of 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz, while Silver Eagles are only offered in the 1 oz size. After two years of legislation, the Platinum American Eagle Coins were first minted in 1997. Until 2008, Platinum American Eagles were produced in ​1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 troy oz denominations. However, after 2008, only the 1 oz denomination continued to be released. The bullion versions of the American Eagles are only sold to the US Mint’s authorized buyers, while Proof Eagles are sold directly to the public.

The obverse displays a stunning depiction of Lady Liberty, staring straight ahead while adorned with her pointed crown. 

The reverse of the coin features the American bald eagle, flying high in the sky with wings outstretched. The eagle flies in front of a rising sun.
