The koala is an herbivore distinctly native to Australia. Although often referred to as a “koala bear”, koalas are actually marsupials, not bears. Koalas climb trees and have a pouch to carry their offspring, similar to kangaroos. Koalas eat eucalyptus leaves, which are normally toxic. Because of this, their bodies consume a large amount of energy to process them. This is why koalas often sleep throughout the day and may only be awake for two hours total! Sadly, this animal is deeply affected by deforestation, wildfires, and the effects of climate change. 

The obverse displays the Jody Clark portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and is inscribed with her name, the country's name, and the denomination.

The 2021 Silver Koala coin's reverse portrays a new design of the koala.  The koala is perched between the branches of a eucalyptus tree, dozing off peacefully. Inscriptions on this side note the coin’s year of issue, the weight, the purity, program name, and Perth Mint 'P' mintmark.
