The Smilodon, often known as a saber-tooth (or sabre-tooth) cat, is an extinct genus of large predatory cats that lived in the Americas during the Pleistocene epoch (2.5 million to 11,000 years ago). They are known for their large and distinctive saber-like canines, which measured up to 7 inches in length. The Smilodon was a powerful predator, capable of taking down large prey such as bison, horses, and camels. In 2019, a 35,000-to-40,000-year-old bone was discovered in the prehistoric plains of southern Alberta, providing the first verified proof of Smilodon fatalis' existence.
