The History of Pobjoy Mint

The Pobjoy Mint was founded by Derek Pobjoy back in 1965 in Surrey, England. Derek, motivated by his wife and father-in-law, who were ardent coin collectors, decided to quit his family’s successful jewelry business to start his coin business. Derek Pobjoy began to research the manufacturing process of coins, the industry, and the potential of the market. He was sure that a strong, yet creative marketing plan would help him gain market position, so he soon purchased his first minting press and established the Pobjoy Mint. The first success of the company was the gold medal series commemorating the life of Winston Churchill. Today, the company is a leading private mint that became famous for producing outstanding commemorative coins, as well as circulating coins, medals, and tokens for other central banks or governments spanning over 12 countries. This prestigious mint received over eighteen coin awards including the Most Popular Coin (Alley Cat Crown, Isle of Man), Most Inspirational Coin (Mother Teresa and Princess Diana, Sierra Leone) and Most Innovative Coin (1st Place Unique Idea Solution for the Silver & Blue Crystal Life of the Sea Turtle, British Indian Ocean Territory). The company’s managing director and second generation of owners, Taya Pobjoy, continues the success of this renowned private mint.

Isle of Man Gold Angel Coins

The Isle of Man Gold Angels was inspired by the historical French coins called Ange or Angelot, which lead to the adoption of the British Angel coin in 1465. From the release of this series in 1984 until 2016, the design of the coin has changed three times. Today, the beautiful Gold Angel Coin is issued by the Isle of Man Government and approved by the Buckingham Palace, showcasing on the obverse side of the coin the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The image of Her Majesty is surrounded by the inscription of her name, issuing country and mintage year, all separated by three Triskelions – the Isle of Man flag’s symbol. On the reverse side of the gold angel, coin is showcased the beautiful image of Archangel St. Michael slaying the dragon beneath while blocking its flaming breath with his shield. His image is encircled by the words “Angel” and the weight and purity marks. The image of St. Michael is believed to bring health, good luck, and protection from any traveling mishap or bad reputation.
