Anthony de Francisci’s impressive design won a competition to find coin designs symbolizing peace. De Francisci designed both the obverse and reverse of the coin.
The obverse design draws inspiration from the features of Anthony’s wife, Teresa. She was the model for the Peace Dollar’s Lady Liberty, shows wearing a radiate crown and facing left. The reverse design, featuring a bad eagle perched on an olive branch and broken sword, initially was met with controversy. The New York Herald ran a scathing editorial two days after the design was announced, citing the broken sword symbolized defeat, though the artist claimed it symbolized victory. The US Mint caved to public opinion soon after, replacing the broken sword with an extra olive branch.
