Originally formed as an English joint-stock company in 1600 to pursue trade with the East Indies, the East India Company ended up trading primarily with China and the Indian subcontinent. In 1649, during a voyage home to England, all East India Company ships were ordered to wait for each other at St. Helena. After Oliver Cromwell granted the company a charter to govern the island in 1657, the EIC decided to colonize and settle there the following year. In 1834 the Crown paid the EIC to hand over the island to return control to the British monarchy.
