Henry Millard, a native of New Orleans, founded Beaumont in 1835 and named it after the family name of his wife - Mary Beaumont. It was incorporated as a town in 1838. Beaumont flourished as a prime lumber town by the late 19th century. The discovery of oil on Spindletop Hill in 1901 led to an oil boom and Beaumont became home for many oil companies.
