Breaking Down Bullion Sales Tax in Oklahoma

The State of Oklahoma recently removed the requirement that in order to be exempted, the bullion items must be stored within a recognized depository facility. Therefore, the state exempts from the tax any sales of gold, silver, platinum, palladium or other bullion items such as coins, bars and legal tenders of any nation. 

Transactions eligible for the exemption are:
(1) Sales of gold, silver, platinum or palladium in the form of coins, bars, ingots, blanks, rounds, and medallions.
(2) Sales of bullion that is or was at one time used as currency or a medium of exchange in the United States or a foreign country when:
  • Sold for an amount based on its value as a precious metal or
  • Sold or purchased as an investment.
The exemption does not apply to the following:
(1) Fabricated metals that have been processed or manufactured for artistic use or as jewelry.
(2) Jewelry or other accessory items such as belt buckles and money clips.
(3) Paper currency.
(4) Bonds, certificates, and stocks.
 
Those coins and bullion that are not exempted from sales tax are chargeable with a 4.5% sales tax in Oklahoma. An additional local or county sales tax is added which can go as high as 11% sales tax in some of the Oklahoma areas.
