Buying Gold and Silver in Ohio
Ohio is the 10th most densely populated and the 7th most populous state in the US. Its name comes from the Ohio River, which means the “great river” but Ohio is also nicknamed as the “Buckeye State” after its famous buckeye trees. It became the 17th state of the United States in 1803. Being a major manufacturing center, Ohio is one of the country’s leading producers of plastics, fabricated metals, electrical equipment and rubber. The state’s economy is also driven by the finance sector, biotech, agriculture and extraction industries. Although silver and gold mining have never been major industries in Ohio, this heavily-populated state is one of the top attractions for some of the best silver and gold dealers in the area, many located near the major cities, such as Columbus, Cincinnati or Cleveland.

Breaking Down Bullion Sales Tax in Ohio
Within the Ohio state, the bullion sales tax is collected on any purchases of precious metals, coins, and paper currency. Ohio previously had had a sales tax exemption for precious metal bullion and investment coins, yet it was repealed because of a massive political corruption scandal (“Coingate”). The current sales tax is 5.75% and is charged across the entire Ohio state. However, some local and city taxes may increase the bullion tax up to 8%.
UPDATE: Starting from January 1, 2017, precious metal bullion and coins are exempted from the state sales tax. Therefore, any purchase of a gold, silver, platinum, or palladium bullion item or coin within the Ohio state is tax-free beginning with 2017.
Bullion Exchanges is not an Ohio-based precious metal retailer. Thus, Ohio residents are not eligible to pay any bullion sales tax when buying precious metal items on our website.
