Elizabeth is the fourth largest city in New Jersey. It was originally called Elizabethtown and was founded by English settlers in 1664. The town was named after the wife of Sir George Carteret, one of the two original proprietors of the colony of New Jersey. Elizabeth was initially the capital of New Jersey.
