Hilo is located on the east side of Hawaii along the Hilo Bay shore. This is the largest city in Hawaii. The place of Hilo served as a trading post for the natives in ancient times. In the 1800s, several missionaries arrived in Hilo and built many churches. Due to the abundance of sugar plantations around the region, the city developed to be a prominent trading post. The dormant Mauna Kea Volcanoes, as well as the active Mauna Loa Volcanoes, are situated near this city.
