Breaking Down Bullion Sales Tax in Alabama

Precious metals are considered tangible personal property hence precious metals for investment purposes are taxable in Alabama. Therefore, the state charges a sales tax of 4% on all sales of precious metal coins, bullion, nuggets, flake, or other forms of gold and silver. Items such as collectors' coins, bills, and currency are also subject to this sales tax. The only exemption is for reselling or if gold is used in another product as a component. The gold or silver that is bought outside of Alabama and thereafter brought into the state is also subject to a use tax at the same rate as the sales tax.

Apart from the 4% tax levied by the State of Alabama, there could be an additional county or city sales tax on the sales of the above-mentioned items. The total sales tax may amount up to 8-12% depending on the county or city you decide to make the sale.
