About the Norse Gods Coin Series

The Norse Gods Coins series consists of nine coins which feature the well-known antique figures of the North Germanic mythology. These figures are human representations of certain phenomena that ancient civilizations couldn’t explain. The popularity of Norse mythology has increased due to its multiple references in present-day films. Yet, its significance had always been crucial to Scandinavians and the culture of Vikings, as the ancient Greek Gods are for the Roman and Greek culture. Among many distinct silver coin series, the Norse Gods series is the only one released in its celebration. The series started in September 2015, as the Cook Islands legal tender coins, being minted at the BH Mayer Mint in only 1,000 coins for each design. The BH Mayer Mint was founded as a family-owned, privately-operated mint in 1871, in Germany. Its tradition is being continued up until today, as the fifth generation facility of master numismatists, minting one of the most exquisite silver and gold coins, like the Norse Gods Silver Series. Each silver coin from this series is made of 2 oz. (62.2 g) of .999 pure silver, with a face value of $10, a diameter of 38.60 mm, and is struck in a brilliant ultra-high-relief proof antique finish. The Silver Norse God Coin is sold in a special capsule within a presentation box, accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by the mint. These coins are an excellent present for Vikings fans and Norse mythology enthusiasts.

The Design of the Norse Gods Coins

Each coin from the Norse Gods Series has a unique 3D ultra-high-relief proof finish which is obtained by striking the blank coin for nine times, using more intense pressure than for regular bullion or proof coins. Also, the coin has an antique look, making it appear much older that it really is. These exclusive warm, depth and feel physical features of the coin makes it very desired by investors and collectors all over the world. On the reverse side of each coin from the Norse Gods series is depicted the profile picture of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998, along with the inscriptions “Cook Islands”, “Elizabeth II”, the year of mintage and the coin’s denomination.

Odin

The Norse Gods Coin featuring the most prominent Norse Gods, the Father of Gods, Odin, is the first coin released in the series. Just like Zeus in the Greek mythology, Odin is the most powerful “All Father” of the Gods, being the King of Asgard and the Lord of War, Death and Knowledge. He is depicted on the obverse side of the coin as sitting on his majestic throne, holding a spear in his right hand, along with his wolf companions, Geri and Freki. Odin’s image is surrounded by the inscriptions “Norse Gods” and “Odin” in English and Norse.

Thor

The Norse Gods Coin featuring one of the most popular Norse Gods, the God of Thunder, Storms and Lightning, Thor, is the second coin released in the series. Thor is referred as the son of the Father of Gods, Odin, and is famous for its magical hammer Mjölnir, which can be wielded only if he wears his magical belt that doubles his enormous strength. On the obverse side of the coin, Thor is depicted as wielding his powerful hammer, led by two rams, with the thunder flashing in the background, along with the words “Norse Gods” and “Thor” in English and Norse.

Tyr

The Norse Gods Coin featuring the God of War and Victory, Tyr, is the third coin released in the series. The exact origin of this legendary mythological figure is a mystery, although it’s believed that he is either Odin’s son or the true father of Gods. Tyr is depicted on the obverse side of the coin as ready for battle, with a sword in his left hand and a shield attached to his right arm, as he lost his right hand when it was bitten by Fenrir, the wolf-like creature. He is pictured as proudly leading his army to victory, encircled by the inscriptions “Norse Gods” and “Tyr” in English and Norse.

Hel

The Norse Gods Coin featuring the Goddess of Death and Afterlife, Hel, is the fourth coin released in the series. The ice queen of the underworld and the daughter of Angrboda and Loki, Hel, is depicted on the obverse side of the coin as half dead, with the souls of dead to her left, and half alive, with the gruesome terrain to her right. Her image is surrounded by the engraved words “Norse Gods” and “Hel” in English and Norse.

Heimdall

The Norse Gods Coin featuring the Watchman of Gods and the Guardian of Asgard’s Gates, Heimdall, is the fifth coin released in the series. Due to his powerful eyesight, acute hearing and a need of very little sleep, he is the one sitting at the top of Bifrost, guarding Asgard and using his horn Gjallar to warn about any intruder that is coming to the kingdom. Also, he is referred as the God of Security, Light and Surveillance. On the obverse side of the coin, Heimdall is depicted as blowing his horn standing on Bifrost, with his sword ready to face any intruders. Asgard is represented in the background, encircled by the inscriptions “Norse Gods” and “Heimdall” in English and Norse.

Loki

The Norse Gods Coin featuring Loki is the sixth coin released in the series. According to the Norse mythology, he is believed to be the son of two giants, Laufey and Farbauto, yet, among some modern sources, he is referred as the son of Odin and brother of Thor. He is the mischievous trickster, who acted either as an ally or as an enemy to the other Norse Gods, causing tremendous trouble. This is because Loki could easily transform into anything, tricking the Gods with his numerous impressions. Loki is depicted on the reverse side of the coin in his true form, surrounded by several animals into which he has transformed (a horse, fish, eagle and fly) and the words “Norse Gods” and “Loki” in English and Norse.

Frigg

The Norse Gods Coin featuring the Goddess of Maternity and Marriage, Frigg, is the seventh coin released in the series. She is the Wife of Odin and the Queen of Asgard, associated with wisdom and foreknowledge in the Norse mythology. Frigg is also related with the Earth in some sources. She is depicted on the obverse side of the coin as sitting on her throne, surrounded by several Norse mythological animals, and encircled by the inscriptions “Norse Gods” and “Frigg” in English and Norse.

Sif - TBD

The Norse Gods Coin featuring the Wife of Thor and Goddess of Earth, Sif, is the eighth coin to be released in the series. She is famous for her beautiful golden hair which is associated with the fields of golden wheat, family and wedlock. Sif is depicted on the obverse side of the coin with her golden hair waving and with the wheat field in the background, surrounded by the words “Norse Gods” and “Sif” in English and Norse.

Freyr - TBD

The Norse Gods Coin featuring the God of Fertility, Freyr is the ninth coin to be released in the series. One of the most important Norse Gods, he is believed to use the power of sun and rain for ensuring bountiful harvests, as well as wealth and peace to the kingdom. He is depicted on the obverse side of the coin as proudly holding his impressive sword with his left hand, surrounded by rain, sun, land, sea and a wild boar. Freyr’s image is surrounded by the engravings “Norse Gods” and “Freyr” in English and Norse.
