$10 Indian Head Gold Coins
INDIAN HEAD GOLD COINS
Want a gold piece that is remarkably scarce, highly valuable, extremely interesting, and a piece of American history? Look no further than the Indian Head Gold coin. The $10 coin was in production until 1929. Almost 100 years later, this gold piece is a must-have for the prominent and affluent numismatic. Their sophisticated and depressed design with high demand will only increase their value over time. These coins are 90% gold with reeded edges. Indian head gold coins are unique in that they helped to transform coinage in the US into exquisite works of art.
COIN DESIGN
The $10 gold coin went through a revamp after the designs of the $2.50 and $5 Indian Heads. This $10 gold coin features Lady Liberty wearing an "Indian War" headdress. Additionally, the obverse features 13 stars, the year of mintage, and the inscription "LIBERTY." The reverse showcases a majestic and mighty eagle—rested upon arrows with an olive branch in his talons. The olive branch and arrows represent war and peace. Inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "IN GOD WE TRUST."
LIBERTY HEAD GOLD DOLLAR
This beautiful gold dollar shows Lady Liberty-- hair in bun and tiara on top of her head. Also, 13 stars encircle her. The laurel wreath on the reverse has berries and holly. The wreath surrounds a roman numeral and showcases the date of mintage and the inscription "DOLLAR."
INDIAN PRINCESS GOLD COIN
The "small head" gold Indian Head Princess was the first of the series to feature Lady Liberty with a native feathered headdress. A new open wreath contained agricultural elements like wheat, corn, tobacco, and cotton—much like America's early farming days. Both this and the "large head" coin was a design by James Longacre. These coins are a favorite among collectors despite their poor striking, as they carry a significant historical value. In 1856, the "small" head coin was redesigned to allow for better striking of the gold coin. The designer, Longacre, expanded Liberty's head, straightened her headdress, and changed her hair. This was to allow the coin's metal to flow more evenly into the dies of the coin. Most were successful in improvement. Additionally, the coin's portrait became flatter, and the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" moved closer to the coin's border.
HENRY FORD
In 1914, Henry Ford decided to start what is known as a revolution in rewarding workers. He doubled the pay of his employees to $5 a day while reducing their workday from 9 to 8 hours. These $10 Indian Head gold coins were two days of pay for the new "highly-paid" workers. Which was a very high face value at the time.
ROOSEVELT'S ORDER
In 1933, Roosevelt signed an order for Americans to turn in their gold. Therefore, gold coins before 1933 are scarce and highly valuable to collectors and investors alike. Additionally, the Indian Head gold coins are the only circulated US coin with a recessed design. These coins are tough to find in mint condition as they were widely circulated and used by many American citizens. So, you can rest assured these will remain in value and make an excellent investment.
