Superman Launches US Mint's Comic Art Coin and Medal Series
Honoring Pop Culture with Precious Metals: Batman and Wonder Woman to Follow in 2025
The United States Mint is venturing into new territory with the debut of its Comic Art Coin and Medal Program, which launched with a ceremonial strike event on April 22, 2025, at the Philadelphia Mint. The inaugural release—a commemorative silver medal featuring Superman—was unveiled in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products (WBDGCP). This groundbreaking initiative brings pop culture and numismatics together in an unprecedented way, celebrating America’s first superhero in precious metal form.
According to the official U.S. Mint press release, "This launch marks the beginning of a historic collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products and represents a major milestone as the Mint embarks on its first public-private collaboration," said Kristie McNally, the Mint’s Acting Director.
Superman Kicks Off the Series in Precious Metal
The inaugural release features The Man of Steel on a 1 oz .999 fine silver medal, accompanied by a serialized Certificate of Authenticity. The series will also include:
-
2.5 oz. .999 fine silver medals
-
Non-precious clad medals
All are set to debut in Summer 2025. The obverse was designed and sculpted by Chief Engraver Joseph Menna, a former DC Comics artist, who brings both numismatic expertise and authentic comic artistry to the design. It features Superman flying above the Kent family farm—highlighting the nurturing values of Ma and Pa Kent, as well as the sun that powers his strength. The design is deeply symbolic, linking Superman's otherworldly abilities with his Earth-bound upbringing.
Menna noted, “The Superman medal represents the strength we have in all of us, that we can all be Super Heroes.”
A Dual Identity on the Reverse
The reverse design by Medallic Artist Joseph V. Noorigian emphasizes Superman’s dual identity and personal journey. The scene depicts a young Clark Kent watching a plane fly overhead, with his father, Pa Kent, observing from a distance—underscoring the quiet strength and inner conflict that defines the hero's path.
Batman and Wonder Woman to Follow
While Superman is the first release in the Comic Art series, the Mint has confirmed that two additional designs will follow in 2025, featuring:
These future releases will continue to blend pop culture, precious metals, and numismatic artistry—likely expanding appeal to comic fans, collectors, and bullion investors alike.
Preston Kevin Lewis, Head of Consumer Products & Retail Strategy at Warner Bros. Discovery, said: “The Superman coin and medal designs highlight Superman’s heroism and humble roots in DC’s comic books and commemorate the world’s first Super Hero.”
A Pop Culture Milestone for Coin Collectors
This release signals a major turning point for the U.S. Mint, as it leans into broader cultural storytelling while maintaining the integrity and quality of its numismatic traditions. The Comic Art Coin and Medal Program opens the door for more modern, licensed collectibles, combining artistry with beloved characters.
It also highlights the expanding appeal of precious metals among new audiences, including fans of DC Comics and younger generations exploring numismatics for the first time.
