Detailed Information:
This Silver Dime was minted from 1946 and is minted till the present date. However, the Roosevelt Dimes minted from 1946-1964 were made up of 90% silver and 10% copper. After the Coinage Act of 1965, the silver content in the coins were removed and the new coins that were minted were made of only copper and nickel except the Kennedy Half Dollars which contained only 40% silver.
All the coins containing silver content started disappearing from circulation, making the Gresham’s Law come true. Sir Thomas Gresham was a financial agent of Queen Elizabeth I in 1588. He observed that if two coins which are legal tenders have a same face value but differ in value regarding their metal content, the coin containing cheaper metal will stay in circulation and will be used for daily trading, whereas the coin containing superior metal or expensive metal will disappear from circulation and will be hoarded by all. Therefore, he concluded that “Bad Money Drives Out Good Money.”
This law proves real in case of pre-1965 USA coins. When the Roosevelt Dime made of copper and nickel was introduced after 1965, more and more people started hoarding the 1946-1964 Roosevelt Dimes which were made of 90% pure silver and 10% copper. Therefore, these good coins completely disappeared from circulation within a few years.
The Roosevelt Dimes were issued to honor the Late President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who played an important role in finding a cure for polio. He raised the fund to research a cure for polio by requesting people of the nation to just donate a dime each for the research. The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis founded by him, which is more popularly known as the March of Dimes became a successful endeavor. Unfortunately, the President left this world before the cure was found. To commemorate his contribution to the nation, the Government brought out the Roosevelt Dime on President Roosevelt’s 64th Birthday on January 30, 1946. The designer of the coin was the chief engraver of the US Mint, John R. Sinnock.
The Roosevelt Dime is a highly respected coin and is very significant historically. Today these coins are favored by investors for their 90% silver content. It is also an easy set to complete for collectors, as there are not many rare dates in these coins.
