Detailed Information:
1932 marked the 200th birthday of the First President of America and to honor him, the Washington Quarter was issued on his behalf. John Flanagan’s design among 100 other designs was selected for the new Washington Quarter.
In the beginning, it was the desire of the Bicentennial Committee that the portrait of Washington appears on the half dollars. The intention was to pause the striking of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar for that year and instead of mint Washington Half Dollars. However, Congress had a totally different idea on its mind. Their plan was to stop the minting of the Standing Liberty Quarter Dollars permanently and replace it with new Washington Quarter Dollars instead. Standing Liberty Quarters had been very difficult for the mint to strike due to the complicated design. Hence the more simplistic design of Washington was preferred by Congress and the US Mint on the quarters.
A competition was held for which around 98 entrants had submitted around 100 designs. Only seven designs out of the 100 were felt worthy of being on a coin. However, one design was extremely good and that was Laura Gardin Fraser’s design. She was a well-known coin designer, and her work included the notable Oregon Trail Memorial pieces and other commemorative coins.
The Treasury Secretary, Andrew W. Mellon, who was a well-known art collector, felt that the work of another participant, John Flanagan was better than the Fraser work. Although the Commission of Fine Arts tried to convince him, he would not budge. Even while the negotiation was on, Mellon resigned for a better opportunity. He was succeeded by Ogden L. Mills, who also was in no mood to listen to the Commission and wanted to stick to the decision of his predecessor, Mr. Mellon.
Finally, the John Flanagan design was used on the Washington quarters, which is used until the present time.
