Detailed Information:

The Franklin Half Dollars were minted from 1948-1963. They were minted at three different locations; the Philadelphia Mint, which bears no mintmark, the Denver Mint with a “D” mintmark, and the San Francisco Mint with an “S” mintmark.

The series was cut short due to the unfortunate incident of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in November 1963, which prompted the Mint to release a new Silver Half Dollar coin bearing Kennedy’s portrait. The Franklin Half Dollars are composed of 90% silver and 10% copper. After the Coinage Act of 1965, the silver content in the half dollars was reduced from 90% to 40%. Hence while Franklin Half Dollars consists of 90% silver content, Kennedy Half Dollars from 1965 onward contain only 40% silver content.

The design for the Franklin Half Dollars was done by John R. Sinnock. However, America, recently struck by the war, could not take its mind off the Russian communists, and the public perceived the JRS initials of the designer at the Franklin’s shoulder cutoff as a tribute being paid to the communist leader Joseph Stalin by a Soviet Union spy in the U.S. Mint. The Mint sent out a clarification that Joseph Stalin did not have a middle name starting from “R” and that it was simply the signature of the Mint’s chief Engraver John Ray Sinnock.

When his design was presented to the Commission of Fine Arts, they had not approved of the design, as the Commission felt that the cracked bell design on the reverse would expose the coinage to many jokes and ridicules. It did not approve of the puny size of the eagle too. However, since this was just an advice by the Commission, the Mint thought of ignoring it and went ahead and minted the coin. Later on numismatist Paul Green noted that the coinage would have gone through more ridicule, puns, and derogatory comments had the bell been depicted without its crack. As the custodians of the bell once stated that the crack had become part of its character.

This is an amazing coin with a great deal of historical significance. It is the first coin to feature a non-presidential person on regular issue of U.S. coinage, and this half dollar is the last coin to contain 90% pure silver in it.
