In 1927, Austrian inventor Eduard Haas III sought an alternative to smoking. His numerous efforts resulted in the creation of the refreshing PEZ candy! Originating from “pfefferminz” (German for peppermint), the word “PEZ” was created when Haas combined the first, middle, and last letters of the word. After successfully breaking into the American market in 1952, the candy company arrived on American soil by establishing a Connecticut factory in 1973. Interestingly, the famous PEZ shape was originally round and called ‘PEZ Drops,’ but was quickly changed to the brick shape we know and love today. The first traditional head dispenser released was the Halloween Witch in 1957, and Popeye was the first licensed character to be featured on a dispenser in 1958.
