In 1927, Austrian inventor Eduard Haas III sought out a possible alternative to smoking. His efforts resulted in the popular PEZ candy. Haas took the first, middle, and last letters of the German word for peppermint (“pfefferminz”) and combined them to form the word “PEZ”.
