In 1986, the American Eagle Program was launched by the US Mint after the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 was passed. The initial release of American Eagles included gold and silver coins. Gold Eagles are produced in four denominations, which are 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz. On the other hand, Silver Eagles are available only in the 1 oz size. The Platinum American Eagle coins were first minted in 1997 after two years of legislation. Until 2008, Platinum American Eagles were produced in four denominations - 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 troy oz. However, only the 1 oz denomination was released after 2008. The US Mint only sells the bullion versions of the American Eagles to authorized buyers while Proof Eagles are directly sold to the public.
