The obverse of the Gold American Buffalo coin depicts a modified version of the Buffalo Nickel design by James Earle Fraser. Buffalo Nickels were 5 cent coins minted from 1913 until 1938. This image features a portrait of a Native American man whose portrait was a combination of three different tribal chiefs that posed for Fraser. The chiefs were from the Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons tribes. In Fraser’s design, the head of a Native American Man faces to the right, showing off his feathered headdress and braids.

The reverse of the coin showcases the American Bison grazing on a grassy field. This illustration was reportedly inspired by a 1,550-pound American Buffalo named Black Diamond who lived in the Central Park Zoo in the 1910s.
