The release of this coin commemorates 100 years since archaeologists discovered Tutankhamun's tomb. Tutankhamun ruled ancient Egypt between 1333 BCE and his untimely death in 1323 BCE, at the age of 19. King Tutankhamun was mummified and buried with priceless artifacts to accompany him to the underworld. The magnificently-crafted death mask resting on King Tut’s shoulders is possibly the most famous and extraordinary archeological find. The Perth Mint honors this historic discovery with this 2022 2oz Silver Proof Gilded Coloured Coin.
The obverse displays the elegant, right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. Her Majesty is surrounded by the following inscriptions: “QUEEN ELIZABETH II”, “TUVALU”, “2 DOLLARS”, “2 oz”, “9999 Ag”, and “2022”.
The reverse showcases a stunning, colorized, 24-carat gold gilded depiction of King Tut’s death mask. The proof background features hieroglyphics, designed from a photograph of the back of the mask. Additionally, the reverse includes hieroglyphs seen in the form of a nameplate that reads, “Tutankhamun, ruler of Heliopolis”.
