Howard Phillips (H.P.) Lovecraft (1890 – 1937) was an American author known for being one of the 20th-century experts on the Gothic Tales of Terror stories. The Cthulhu mythology originated in Lovecraft’s story called “The Call of Cthulhu,” and has since been featured in many graphic novels, books, and games! According to the lore, Cthulhu is the leader of The Old Ones, a species that predates human existence. Their city slipped underneath the Pacific Ocean, within the Earth's Crust. Recognized for his gigantic size and his squid-like facial features, Cthulhu aims to terrorize mankind.

The obverse features the image of a human beneath a pattern of tentacles. The Palau coat of arms and inscriptions are also displayed.

The reverse depicts Cthulhu emerging from the depths of the ocean and engulfing a sailboat in his tentacles.
