The British Royal Mint kicked off the Britannia coin series in 1987 with the release of the Gold Britannia Coin. Subsequently, in 1997, the Silver Britannia Coin was first released and continues to be produced alongside the gold variety. The most recent addition to the program was the Platinum Britannia Coin, first introduced in 2018, which drew positive attention from investors all over the world. Although a fairly modern coin, the term “Britannia” traces its roots back to the 1st Century AD, during a time of significant conquest for the Roman Empire. The name “Britannia” is widely used for the mythical figure tasked with defending the British Isles from those who may attack them. Hence, the personification of Britannia is considered to be among the most important images on British coinage to this day. 

The obverse of this coin features the Jody Clark effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, facing to the right while adorned with her royal crown. The reverse showcases the inspirational depiction of “Britannia” standing firmly amidst powerful winds. She holds her trident with her outstretched arm and grasps onto a shield and olive branch with her other hand.
