After repeated debates regarding the financial practicality of the penny, Canada’s Standing Senate Committee on National Finance began examining the future of the one-cent coin. On December 14, 2010, the Senate finance committee officially recommended the removal of the penny from circulation, arguing that the value and usefulness of the one-cent piece have been eroded by a century of inflation.  On the morning of May 4, 2012, the final Canadian penny was minted at the RCM's Winnipeg, facility. It is currently featured in the Bank of Canada Museum in Ottawa.

The reverse showcases a modernized depiction of the Canadian penny design, with geometric angles and multifaceted surfaces that reflect light. A gold-plated background shines bright behind the silver leaf and twig.
