The Klondike is a region of the territory of Yukon located in northwestern Canada. The richest gold-bearing creeks were Bonanza (formerly Rabbit) and Eldorado Creeks where most of the gold sat buried near the bedrock. During the Klondike Gold Rush, prospectors used a method known as drift mining to reach the gold. Drift mining entails digging a hole through permanently frozen gravel and then tunneling horizontally. The miners hauled the “paydirt” to the surface and accumulated it until the spring. Once it was warmer and the gravel thawed, they filled sluice boxes with the paydirt so the gravel could be washed away. If there wasn’t a significant amount of water in the creeks, miners used rocker boxes to pan for gold. Using this method, they manually poured water through the contraption and rocked the box back and forth to separate the gold from the gravel and sand. Thanks to these methods of gold mining, Yukon became a mining frontier during the Klondike Gold Rush, and Canada became recognized as a leading gold producer. There was an influx of settlers during and after the gold rush. Unfortunately, this displaced and disrupted the Indigenous communities whose land overlapped with what we now call the Yukon territory. The gold rush was a significant chapter in Canada’s history, and the complicated effects are still felt in the country today.
