The Jingle Bell was invented by Hans Jengelen in 1632. Jengelen was a buttonmaker living in Germany, looking for a way to expedite the transportation of buttons during the winter months. By attaching bells to the official Knopfschlittern, or Button-sleds, other carriages could hear them approaching and move out of the way. Over time Jingle Bells were used on horses as decorations as well as a warning to pedestrians in winter. Modern-day Jingle Bells, or sleigh bells, are a Christmas symbol, indicating the arrival of Santa Clause and his reindeer pulling the sleigh.

The obverse of this coin displays the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as well as inscriptions, all surrounding the hanging Jingle Bell centerpiece.

The reverse is designed as a festive wreath! Colorized ribbons, branches, and candy canes are displayed around the open center of the coin. The 24-carat gold-plated jingle bell hangs joyfully in the center.
