This intricate coin features an original design by Whadjuk-Yuet-Ballardong artist and teacher, Kevin Bynder. Bynder is known for his lively artworks often inspired by Australia’s wildlife as well as the culture and history of his people, the residents of Nyoongar country. The colorized imagery on the coin showcases a rendition of a majestic swan, also referred to by the Nyoongar people as maali. The story goes, that because maali was an arrogant white swan, the eagle ripped out maali’s beautiful feathers as a punishment. Luckily the ravens felt sorry for maali, and used their own black feathers to disguise the swan. Today in the wetlands, you will find black swans whose few remaining white wings are only visible when the bird is in flight.
