The Perth Mint Kangaroo coin was originally known as the “Gold Nugget” coin when the series debuted in 1986. The Perth Mint decided to redesign the series to showcase a more recognizable Australian icon: the red kangaroo. The first release of this modern series was the Gold Kangaroo coin in 1990, and the first Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Kangaroo was released in 2016. The Platinum Perth Mint Kangaroo coin, the newest edition of the Kangaroo coin program, was first introduced and released in 2018. The Kangaroo collection is not the only one to feature Australian wildlife. More Australian coins with animals include the famous Silver Kookaburra coins and Gold and Silver Koala coins.
The obverse bears the royal Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty wears her famous crown with matching royal earrings and necklace. The rim is inscribed with her name, “AUSTRALIA”, and the denomination of 100 dollars.
The reverse for the 2022 Platinum Kangaroo coin displays the classic image of the Red Kangaroo mid-hop. Stalactites and stalagmites border the coin’s rim. Inscriptions indicate the name of the coin, year of issue, weight, and purity around the rim.
