The People’s Bank of China initiated the Chinese Gold Panda series in 1982. Gold Panda coins were initially available in 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz sizes, with the 5 oz, 12 oz, and 1/20 oz sizes being added later. In 2016, the People’s Bank of China began measuring the weight of the gold panda series in grams instead of ounces, releasing 1, 3, 8, 15, and 30 gram versions. Proof editions are minted in 1 kilo, 150 grams, 100 grams, and 50 grams. Collectors seek out this panda series for its diverse range of sizes, but they also look forward to the annually-updated reverse design as well!

The obverse of the coin showcases the Temple of Heaven, an imperial complex of religious buildings found in the southeastern part of central Beijing. The year of mintage is inscribed along the rim, alongside the Chinese Characters for “People’s Republic of China.”

The reverse for the 2022 Gold Panda depicts two young panda cubs playing in the freshly-fallen snow. The 40th Anniversary privy mark is inscribed at the bottom left.
