An hourglass (also known as a sand clock) is a device that has been used to measure the passage of time since around 8 CE. Composed of an upper bulb and a lower bulb connected in the middle, an hourglass normally contains sand that slowly trickles down from the upper to the lower bulb. Interestingly, the earliest known hourglasses did not feature two connected bulbs. A cord was wrapped around them and sealed with wax to let the sand flow between them. In 1760, the bulbs were blown together, and that has remained the norm ever since. Additionally, sand was not the most common material used inside hourglasses at first. Instead, most bulbs contained "powdered marble, tin/lead oxides, [or] pulverized, burnt eggshell". While no longer widely used as a timekeeping instrument, the hourglass has become an enduring symbol of time itself and a powerful symbolic reminder of the transience of all things.

The obverse displays an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II at the top, with inscriptions surrounding the coin’s border. Eight-pointed stars surround the coin’s hourglass insert. 

The reverse showcases an astrological design in the style of Art Nouveau. The expressive sun and moon border the coin’s top and bottom, while various planets adorn the sides around the hourglass insert.
