Typically, both the obverse and reverse dies strike a single planchet at the same time, imprinting the obverse and reverse designs each on either side of the planchet. However, the two planchets for these coins were sitting on top of one another in the striking chamber. When the dies struck the planchets, the planchet sitting on top did not receive an imprint from the anvil die, and the planchet sitting on the bottom did not receive an imprint from the hammer die. NGC has recognized these two pieces as a "mated pair" meaning they were struck at the same time in the same chamber, creating this error.
