In 2020 the United States Mint announced that they will release Silver Eagles with a new reverse design in mid-2021. This meant that for some time during 2021, Silver Eagles were being issued with two different reverse designs.
The obverse of both coins features Lady Liberty walking towards the sunrise, enveloped in the American flag, holding oak and laurel branches.
Designed by Mercanti, the Type 1 reverse displays a bald eagle, wings spread, holding a shield under thirteen stars.
Designed by Emily Damstra, the Type 2 reverse depicts a bald eagle mid-flight, grasping an oak branch in its talons.
