The Snow Maiden, called “Снегурочка“ (Snegurochka) in Russian, is a beloved character in Russian folklore. There are many variations to her story, but one of the popular versions claim her as the daughter of Father Frost and Mother Spring. She went to live with an elderly couple who were unable to have children, she and took care of them. Sadly, in one story she melts after leaping over a campfire while playing with other girls. In another, her heart melts after falling in love with a young man. Her wintery beauty is consistent throughout most versions, as she is depicted with snow-white skin, vivid blue eyes, and light, curly (often braided) hair.

The obverse of this coin displays the recognizable portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian-Rank Broadley. The Queen faces to the right and wears her royal crown.

The reverse of this coin features a stunning colorized scene of a smiling Snow Maiden accompanied by her young deer friend and friendly bluebird in the wintery woods. Snowflakes border the bottom right of the oval, while a swirling wind design appears on the left. The Russian word “Снегурочка“ is inscribed along the bottom rim and the year is inscribed along the top.
