Arguably the most popular and recognized ancient coin, the Athenian Owl tetradrachm was in wide circulation in Ancient Greece from c. 510 to c. 38 BC. In Athens, it replaced the earlier "heraldic" type of didrachms and was renamed after the Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena. In Greek mythology, a little owl traditionally accompanies and sometimes represents Athena. Because of this, the owl has been frequently used as a symbol of knowledge, wisdom, and erudition throughout the Western world. Conversely, due to their nocturnal existence, owls became equally linked to the occult and the Otherworld. Famous owls in literature and media include Owl from Winnie the Pooh, Archimedes, Merlin’s familiar in Sword and the Stone, and Hedwig from the Harry Potter series. Celebrate this icon of numismatic history by purchasing the Owl Tetradrachm coin now!

The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by inscriptions.

The reverse showcases a reimagining of the original ancient silver tetradrachm coin: An Athenian Owl, standing under an olive branch and moon crescent, turns its head to stare directly at the viewer. The owl itself is raised off the coin’s surface to produce a three-dimensional effect. Instead of the inscription "ΑΘΕ" found on the original tetradrachm coins which was an abbreviation for “ΑΘΗΝΑΙΩΝ” ("of the Athenians") CIT has inscribed the letters “CI”.
