Stories of the hypothetical continent of Terra Australis (Latin for “South Land”) originated during Roman Times (27 BC-AD 476). Versions of Terra Australis first appeared on maps between the 15th and 18th centuries as explorers traversed the Pacific Ocean. British navigator Lieutenant James Cook arrived in the British Royal Navy’s HM Bark Endeavour in 1770, and he is credited with producing the first charted maps of the Australian east coast.

The reverse of the coin, designed by Aleysha Howarth, contains a beautiful outer rim displaying representations of iconic Australian marine life. These aquatic animals include the great white shark, blue-ringed octopus, sea turtle, seahorse, starfish, and stingray. A mesmerizing mother of pearl insert shaped like Australia is prominently showcased in the center of the coin. The coin’s purity, weight, and “P” mintmark appear on the reverse as well.
