The obverse design displays the Augustus Saint-Gaudens illustration of Lady Liberty walking forward with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. In the background, there are rays of sunlight radiating from the US Capitol behind Lady Liberty.

The reverse of the $50 Gold Eagle features the famous image by Miley Busiek: A family of American bald eagles. One parent swoops down toward the nest where the other parent and baby eagle await. The flying eagle clutches an olive branch in its talons.
