The American Gold Eagle Coins were first struck in 1986. The Gold Eagles are the first official gold bullion coin of the US since private gold ownership was legally reinstated since being outlawed during the Great Depression. The 2021 Gold Eagle coins are particularly special because this year marks the first major redesign of the gold and silver program. The obverse of both the Silver and Gold Eagles will remain the same with refreshed images of their respective designs. Now, both editions spotlight the bald eagle in a more realistic form. The obverse of the Gold Eagle coin displays a refreshed image of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty. She walks forth, holding a flaming torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other to put forth the message of peace through strength. Rays of sunlight radiate from the US Capitol behind her.

The reverse of the Gold Eagle features a close-up image of the left side of a bald eagle’s head. Inscriptions surround the eagle including the country, weight, purity, denomination, “E Pluribus Unum”, and “In God We Trust”.
