The obverse design is emblazoned with the Adolph A. Weinman Walking Liberty design. In the image, Lady Liberty strides forth to welcome the dawn of a new day. Oak and laurel branches lie in her left arm as her right outstretches to the sun, as though to greet it. Draped around her shoulders is the US flag that gently sways in the breeze. 

The reverse, as created by John Mercanti in 1986, is embellished with a rendition of the US Seal. The heraldic eagle bears a US flag shield on its chest, carries a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, and has thirteen stars twinkling overhead.
