In Springfield, MA in 1959, the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame opened. This Hall is so named for the founder of basketball from the 1890s, James Naismith, who introduced the game in Springfield. The independent, nonprofit organization operates around the globe with a mission to spread the game of basketball. It is most known for the annual Enshrinement Ceremony, but it also oversees more than seventy high school and collegiate competitions both domestically and internationally.

The obverse of this coin sports the winning design from a public competition. Justin Kunz from the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) was the winner. He set out to spotlight both the diversity of the athletes for this game and the endurance basketball demands from its players with his illustration. Three different athletes reach for a basketball in mid-air over their heads. The background has a subtle design of a basketball net that is paired with the border of the coin as a basketball rim. This foreground and background suggests that the three players might be about to score.

The reverse of this coin was designed by AIP artist Donna Weaver. She illustrated a classic image of a basketball about to fall through a hoop with inscriptions around the border.
